THE SCHOLARSHIP

Members of Ekwendini Youth Against AIDS hold a schoolyard AIDS awareness session

In Southern Africa the education system is being ravaged as teachers are dying from HIV/AIDS faster than new ones can be trained. Millions of orphans cannot pay for school fees and uniforms. Malawi is rated by the U.N. as one of the poorest countries in the world.

We were so impressed by the young people in this Malawian community that when the Afro-Celt Sound System (Real World Music) and Youssou N'Dour (EMI/Virgin Music) offered to donate their music royalties to a charity of our choice we immediately contacted the Canadian Public Health Association for assistance in creating a Scholarship Fund for the youth of Ekwendini.

Here small amounts of money make a big difference. We discovered that it only takes $300 to keep a child in school for a year and so every sale or showing of Condoms, Fish & Circus Tricks does more than spread awareness it sends money to help young Malawians survive the crisis.
